Status

The island is part of the state of St Vincent and the Grenadines, independant since 27 October 1997 and member of the Commonwealth with Kingstown on St Vincent as capital.

Before you stop at Tobago Cays you must do your clearnace in one of the ports of entry of St Vincent. The nearest being Union Island or Canouan. Other ports of entry are on St Vincent, Mustique and Bequia.

Restrictions

All fishing, including spearfishing, is strictly prohibited everywhere (unless you have a written permit from the Department of Maritime Affairs and Fishery, which can be obtained at customs on arrival).

Buying lobsters is prohibited from 1st May to 30 September and throughout if carrying eggs. Buying turtle is prohibited from 1st March to 31 July.

Public nudity is illegal in St. Vincent & The Grenadines and topless sunbathing is discouraged.

Since 2006 the Tobago Cays moorings are charged and reasonable fees collected by the National Parc Marine Rangers.
