The island is hilly with Mont Taboi rising to 304 meters, the highest point of the Grenadines, in the south. Building the island's airport required filling out a land finger reaching out to a small coral island. This man-made construction is clearly visible to those arriving from the north.
The island is part of the state of St Vincent and the Grenadines, independant since 27 October 1997 and member of the Commonwealth with Kingstown on St Vincent as capital.
